Description
The scenic depiction of the Ascension describes with complexity but also in details, the climax of Christ’s journey. The iconography that is housed in the Monastery of Stavronikita, elaborated by Theophanis the Cretan is a typical exemplar of the Cretan school, the second half of the 15th century. At the top of the icon, Christ is sitting on a round glory that is carried by two angels. At the background, the rocks with olives indicate the location of the Ascension, the Mount of Olives. The Apostles are on the front side, with Paul on the left and Peter on the right standing close to each other, confused and surprised.
