Description

The well is deep, made of solid stone, it has been related to Jacob for 2000 years. It is walking distance from Tell Balata, a current archeological site of Palestinian West Bank, or the biblical Shechem. In their traditions and scripture, the Jews, Samaritans, Christians, and Muslims refer to the well of Jacob. In the New Testament (John 4-5-6) it is in the well of Jacob that Jesus encountered the Samaritan woman, Saint Fotini. Also, according to Christian tradition, the well of Jacob is where Christian baptisms were probably taking place. A church was built in 384 AD over the well, which was probably destroyed during the uprisings of the Samaritans, between 484 and 529 AD. Under the rule of Justinian as emperor, the church was re-built where it remained intact until the early 9th century.

Near the well, Jesus and Saint Fotini had a conversation that was rooted in the New Testament. The birth origin of Jesus convinced the Samaritans to believe in Him, after they were persuaded by the words of the Saint Fotini, being herself assured by the words of Christ himself.

In the encounter between Jesus and Saint Fotini, Jesus was tired and asked the woman to pull water from the well. She denied Him because they came from different tribes, she is being a Samaritan and He being a Judean. During their discussion, the woman realized that the man with whom she had been talking was indeed the Savior, the Messiah, and ran to inform her fellow Samaritans. In the next two days, most of the people in the area were already convinced that He was their Messiah.
