Description
Hand painted icon of the Virgin Mary Pregnant, made in Mount Athos, on natural wood. The icon is delivered in a wooden box.
The Virgin Mary represents the protection and care of all pregnant women and families who haven’t had children yet. The prototype of this icon has been known since the 11th century; however, it is one of the rarest depictions of the Theotokos in Orthodox tradition. In this rare iconography, Theotokos is depicted in a state of pregnancy after the Annunciation. She is positioned between two angels who protect and care for her, holding a red veil. The Pregnant Virgin Mary touches her belly with the Divine Infant, Jesus Christ. The Synaxis of the Virgin Mary Pregnant is celebrated on September 25th.
