Description

Saint Anthony, also referred to as Anthony of Egypt, Anthony the Great, or Anthony of the Desert, is an Eastern Orthodox saint. Born in Egypt in 251 AD, Saint Anthony was the son of Christian nobles in Egypt. Anthony was a devout Christian, dedicating his life to Christianity and the church as a monk, eventually becoming known as the Father of Monks. During his lifetime, Saint Anthony was a fervent defender of his faith, aiding Christians facing persecution under Maximinus in 312 AD and speaking out against Arianism. Saint Anthony also evangelized many non-believers.

Saint Anthony is noted as saying, “One should not say that it is impossible to reach a virtuous life; but one should say that it is not easy. Nor do those who have reached it find it easy to maintain. Those who are devout and whose intellect enjoys the love of God participate in the life of virtue.” Saint Anthony is often depicted holding a scroll, which refers to Holy Wisdom. Scrolls are seen in the icons of Saints that were known to share wisdom and holy knowledge with others. His feast day is celebrated on January 17th.
