Description
Saint Mattheos, also known as Saint Matthew or Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, was a disciple of Christ. According to tradition, Mattheos was born in Galilee where he worked as a tax collector. Mattheos was called upon by Christ one day when He passed by the house that Mattheos was at and bade him to “Follow me.” Mattheos was moved to follow Christ immediately, becoming one of the Twelve Apostles.
Following this, Mattheos invited Christ to a feast, prompting the Pharisees to call Jesus a hypocrite for sitting amongst sinners, such as tax collectors. Jesus responded by saying, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Mattheos remained a strong follower of Christs, witnessing His ascension into Heaven. After this, Mattheos travelled around Judea and other countries, preaching the Gospel.
Mattheos is credited with the Gospel of Matthew, which is why he is depicted holding a book in the icon. Books further symbolize Holy Knowledge and Holy Wisdom. The Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Mattheos on November 16, but he is also commemorated on June 30 with the Twelve Apostles.
