Description
The icon of Extreme Humility, also known as the icon of Jesus Christ “The King of Glory,” is from Mount Athos in the 13th century AD. It depicts Jesus Christ standing naked in an open sarcophagus. It is clear that the Holy Passion has already occurred as Jesus’ wounds show where he was nailed to the cross.
The Virgin Mary is depicted with a melancholy expression, suggesting that this icon depicts the time between Christ’s death and resurrection. Leaning into His mother, Christ’s expression is that of humility, referencing the pain and suffering He endured for humanity as a servant of God. The letters ‘MP ΘΥ’ and ‘IC XC’ appear above the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ; they mean “Mother of God” and “Jesus Christ”, respectively, in Greek.
