Description
Known as Eleusa or "Tenderness," the icon depicts the Christ Child embracing Mary, with his cheek against hers, gazing at her. She is portrayed looking outward with a solemn, sorrowful gaze, anticipating her son's suffering.
The second prototype is named Eleousa or “Merciful”. The Virgin holds the Lord Jesus, clasping him to her, in a clear expression of maternal tenderness and intercession.
It is believed that this original Byzantine icon was painted by St. Luke, one of the 12 Disciples. In Russia, they call her “The Most Holy Mother of God”. This icon shows the Mother of God holding the Christ child close to her heart with tenderness.
