Saint Porfyrios was born to a very poor family on February 7, 1906, in Evia. His father immigrated to America, and the young boy left his birthplace at the age of 7 years old to work in Chalkida first and then in Piraeus. Having finished only the first grade of the elementary schoo,l he was able to read the life of Saint John the Kalyvitis, whose life he wanted to imitate. At the age of 12 he went to Mount Athos under the guidance of two Fathers Superiors, Panteleimon and Ioannikios. At the age of 14, he became a mon,k and a while later God gifted him with clairvoyance. When he was 26 years old, he was ordaineda priest at Saint Charalambos of Kymi, who named him Porphyrios. He lived a virtuous and deeply philosophical life and passed away in 1991 at Mount Athos, at his beloved Kafsokalyvia, according to his will.
