Saint Jonah, born Ivan Myroshnychenko, was the founder and abbot of the Holy Trinity Monastery in the Kyivan neighbourhood of Zvirynets. From an early age, he dedicated himself to God, receiving spiritual guidance from Saint Seraphim of Sarov and Saint Paisius Velichkovsky. Following divine visions of Jesus Christ, he established the monastery on the banks of the Dnipro River. The monastery quickly flourished, becoming a spiritual center with 462 monks. Saint Jonah significantly contributed to the establishment of the noetic or contemplative prayer (prayer of the heart) and gained renown as a charismatic spiritual father endowed with the gift of foresight. He reposed in 1902 at the age of 108. His canonization was completed in 1966. Saint Jonah’s memory is honored on 9 January (old calendar) January 22 (new calendar), and his holy relics remain a source of healing for the faithful.
